It's quite cheap for a 11-16mm and the (few) reviews are quite good. The general rule is that any product with 'PRO' in the name is definitely NOT professional equipment.

I owned this lens and used it quite a bit. It was very sharp all the way to the edges at f4. Slight vignetting at f2.8, but acceptable. I sold it when I went to the D600. Highly recommended

The Tokina PRO line is their top consumer lenses. I agree that using "PRO" for high quality lenses is a mistake, however, just because the label "PRO" is abused in many consumer markets, like hand tools and some photography accessory products, does not automatically associate it with anything inferior in another photographic brand offerings or sub-market. In this case, the Tokina 11-16mm is an excellent lens in its price point and rivals many lenses costing a lot more. Mine works very well. Check numerous reviews. Rent/borrow one for a day. No review or opinion is more important than the user's.

A note on reviews: Like sports cars, photographic lens testing exposes the extremes of performance and subtle differences between lenses that most consumers would either never notice or never appreciate. If your main focus is producing photos for Web publishing, then ultra high detail capability is totally wasted as the Web display standard is about 72-90 dpi. On the other hand, if the intended output is gigantic posters to be viewed from a close vantage point then high resolution and fine detail will be appreciated.

Too much time is spent worrying about whether this lens is slightly better than that lens in the corners on cloudy days when pointing north. Many of the most important photographers have used equipment that is crude by today's standards, but, regardless, they have produced stunning, lyrical results without HDR and computer post-processing. Time spent on improving technique and 'eye' will pay off greater dividends than agonizing over equipment minutia.

Just remember that on Nikon cameras, it will not autofocus on bodies that do not have a drive pin sticking out of the mounting plate on the camera body. These lenses do not have an internal motor and have to be autofocused by a focus motor built into the camera. The Nikons I know they will work on are the D70,D80,D90. There are some newer ones they will work on also, but I am not familiar with all the Nikon bodies and which ones have a built in focus motor.
