Thinking about a last-minute trip somewhere in early February. My wife, I and some friends are looking for ideas.

Two main criteria: warm and photogenic. (I tried to talk them into a winter Yellowstone trip. Great photo opportunities, but it just isn't going to happen.)

It can be in the U.S., Caribbean or Central America. A big plus would be ease of car rental and driving ourselves around so we can enjoy/photograph at our own pace.

I'm counting on you hedgehogs for some good ideas.

We've been to the Keys. Any specific places you've enjoyed on the Gulf Coast or Panhandle?

Costa Rica. Although I've never been this time of the year. They have lots of photographic opportunities: Hummingbirds, Butterfly gardens, vistas, coastal scenes, iguanas & monkeys, poison dart frogs/exotic insects (Hint: take the macro!) an active volcano.

Costa Rica is suppose to be great - also Belize. What about Hawaii? Personally, I like Yellowstone better. Challange their manhood, womenhood .

Why not winter in Yellowstone? Everybody should do it at least once in their lifetime while they are still young enough to appreciate the beauty found there!

Barbados
Antigua, San Marteen and Anguila (too close together not to visit all three)
US Virgin Islands
Puerto Rico

All good Caribbean destinations this time of year.

I'm an "old fart" and I'd love to do Yellowstone in the Winter... gotta convince the others.... Or maybe I'll just run away from home. ;-)
Are there areas that are closed in the Winter? I think I recall that one of the park entrances closed.

Four entrances are closed in winter and open only to snowcoach tours, and yes they are heated. The only entrance open in the winter months is the North entrance at Gardiner, Montana. The road through the northern tier of the park is kept plowed and open as it is the only winter access to the world from the Montana towns of Silvergate and Cooke City.
The best snowcoach tours are from Mammoth Hot Springs and West Yellowstone.

Oh man, now you've done it. Got me all worked up about that trip. I'm negotiating it with the better half. She's not convinced yet, but she's given me permission to start checking prices. I call that one foot in the door.

If this happens, you are going to have to give me some tips on shooting in the snow. I would think it would present some challenges to the dynamic range of the camera sensor.

Take note to what MT said above:
"Four entrances are closed in winter and open only to snowcoach tours".
If so, I don't think this is what you want is it? :-(
