Just bought a Nikon D3200 with a kit lens 18-55mm and need a better zoom lens. Reading photo books a few fearure photos where taken with a 70-200mm whereas I was thinking of a 55-200mm. Would appreciate some guidance on this. Thanks

Go with the 70-200mm. I think it is a better lens.....

I recently bought a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS. to use on my D3100. Absolutely superb-great AF, sharp as a tack, & the OS is unreal-Just about impossible to take a bad picture when hand held. Check it out.

I got a 55-200mm for my D3100, use it mainly for backyard wildlife shots.

ANY 70-200mm F 2.8 is 5 times the lens that the DX 55-200mm is. Save up and get it, well worth the investment. Also, consider the Sigma version, its just as fast and sharp for about half the money as the Nikon.

I find the 55-300 sharper and better becuase of the additional reach.

I echo the advice offered by MT Shooter. In addition I too purchased a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 - read this review, http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/325-sigma-af-70-200mm-f28-ex-hsm-apo-dg-macro-nikon-review--test-report - I got it on eBay UK from a nice old gent whose hands had become "wobbly" ! It's mint, and very, very sharp. Do your searches well and you shouldn't have to pay either for the Nikon version or even a brand new Sigma.

Can't see your logic, JR1. Morris has just bought a new camera with a kit lens & wants to improve on the kit lens. What's wrong with that?. I reiterate that the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 compares with the Nikon, at half the cost, as MT stated.

If JR1 doesn't know why Morris is thinking of a different lens, well duh!!

Hey Doc ..... well duh!! yourself ..... from the op's post he's evidently new to photography ..... most D3200 buyers will not be considering glass like the 70-200 if for no other reason the expense .....

..... maybe money doesn't matter but it chances are it will .....

..... makes a lot more sense to figure out where ya going before you start driving there ..... doesn't it doc?

If you want to stay with nikon lenses think about new 70-200 f4 priced at $1400. The reviews are good. It's lighter in wt. and cost!

If a person just wants to get up close to a subject, Nikon has 55-300mm lenses for around $200.00. I hear the words "GOOD GLASS" being talked about, just what is "GOOD GLASS" And how much photo quality is a person going to lose if he or she doesn't use "GOOD GLASS"?

I would try a nikon 18-300mm, If you are going to need a zoom. I took mine on a trip to Vietnam and it covered just about every photo op. I came across The 70-200mm which I also have is a fantastic lens but cost twice as much and is not twice as good. The 18-300mm is pretty compact and light considering the range it covers.

18-300mm
