Well it's not the most atractive , but it works ,what do you think? Made from a piece of steel stock , bent via my PU hitch and addition of 2 bolts and a piece of scrape leather.

Haven't taken it outside yet (too cold) ,but indoors does alright . Got to add a lock so won't swing back and forth when changing lenses...

Just wait until you see how much it will wave in the wind with a bigger lens mounted to it.

It has no extra movement due to being made from grade 6 steel...

You bent it by hand, that means its maleable. Looks like 1/4" x 1" steel flat bar to me. Believe me, it will flex and move, especially once you get 3 pounds or more of camera and lens on it.

Maybe you two guys can meet midway between your two states and give it a test. :D

Well I wouldn't call a 3 foot cheater bar by hand exactly , and after 25 years at making such things I do understand what will and what won't work....

I love home made solutions and this is no exception! I have never used a gimbal (I rarely shoot telephoto) but your photo and ingenuity prompt this question: Should the lens attachment thread be in-line with the tripod attachment so that the unit revolves around just one axis? Just curious.

I suppose I should have stated this was made for my tripod and lense setup , not for general use . If I was going to build one for the general public it would be a lot heavier , people tend to be abusive to things without even trying....
