I am trying to get the hang of phomatix. I think I may have overdone some of them but I kinda like the effects so I just left them. I framed the moon in one of the swan shots and tone mapped a single photo and then used the onone perfect effects and added some glow to it.

For handheld that's not bad. Nice detail and you have avoided halos which isn't always easy on a bright day against a clear blue sky. You have brought out some nice details on the shade side but the side facing the sun is blown hence the white/grey stripe. Don't know what bracketing you used or what your camera can do but when the light is that stark it is difficult to get away with anything less than 5 shots.

Pic 2
Better control of light in this one. Still blown on the sun side but not too far off. Would suggest that you frame slightly wider on this sort of shot so that you can fix the perspective distortion without cutting important parts of the building.

Pic 3
Thats nice. Good control of the light. Lots of details brought out. Would suggest that you up the contrast in PP and a little sharpening, otherwise my pic of the shots in this group.

Pic 4
The effect (looks like you used the surreal lighting effect) has flattened the pic a little which is perhaps what you wanted. However the result has also been that the face is blown and you have lost facial detail. I prefer the first but that's a personal thing.

Pics 5/6
Like the perspective and colours a lot on these but prefer the first as you have retained the detail which has been lost in the glow of the second. The back of the necks are blown but in the first, to my eye, this does not detract in fact it may even enhance the pic.

Pic 7
The b&w conversion has actually brought out some additional detail in the far wall and the railings on the left look really good. Unfortunately a clear featureless sky doesn't convert well.

Pic 8
Overall I think this works better than the b&w conversion because the sky isn't so stark. You have also avoided an halos and blowout which as I have said is hard to to under these conditions.

Pic 9
Again you have handled the light well though there are a couple of darker areas in the foreground where more detail could perhaps have been brought out. I might have been tempted to pull back the red of the roof of the little shed behind the rails as it is fighting for my attention.

You said at the beginning some of these were overdone but I have to say they are much more controlled than the first group you posted. You seem to be getting the hang of Photomatix and HDR very quickly.

Hope this helps. Keep them coming.

Peter

Thanks again for your time in commenting it is better to be honest than to blow smoke where the sun don't shine. That is why I like it here, comments like yours help me grow as an artist. I will try and remember all of it and apply it next time.
