This past week I had the chance to fly to Montserrat on a helicopter for some shots of the volcano and the remains of Plymouth. I have been to Plymouth at ground level but it is quite different and amazing from the air. I was really surprised that some of these came out as well as they did since I was shooting through the copter window.
Volcano
Plymouth and volcano
Remains of the Catholic church
Sugar Mills left standing
Volcano and path of pyroclastic flow
Volcano
Up close and personal with the volcano, note the streaks of sulfur on the rock
Volcanic cone
Volcano with Guadeloupe in the background
New beach created by the volcano
Montserrat with Redonda in the background and Nevis in the far back
Marinole: Great pictures. Great devastation in the area.
Great series

And to think, this morning I was wondering how to make geological pictures interesting to a non-geologist.

LOL, Radiumjohn. Personally I find geological shots very interesting, especially anything showing lots of strata and earth's movement.

So do I, but sometimes the details of geology are not as exciting to non-geologists as geologists.

Well, I am not a geologist (other than general interest in what I am seeing) but who could help getting excited about an active volcano!!!!! Too bad more people don't have the opportunity. It is more than fascinating!!!

Also a geologist. Isn't it a great life? I've been in the crater of Vesuvius and seen Mt. Etna erupting. I really enjoyed your pictures.

Wow, I am impressed. That is so exciting!!! Other than some far views in Guatemala and Costa Rica, this is my only volcano.

BTW, Radiumjohn, you are probably aware that this volcano doesn't have a crater and doesn't spew lava but has had massive pyroclastic flows (proving that pyroclastic flows can travel over water) and its cone had grown tremendously over the past few years. I figure anything that unstable and growing that fast has to come down eventually. It is an exciting place to be.
What beautiful and interesting pictures Marinole! They really told a story.

To a trained and inquiring eye, every rock can tell a story.
