Hi all. I need help configuring LR 4 to store both catalog and pics to be used both on the desktop and the laptop. I copied the pictures and catalog to the external drive. I can use the catalog on the external drive but it is still listing the folder with the pictures on desktop drive.

Bottom line: External for both the desktop and the laptop. Pictures on the desktop and the catalog and the pictures on the external. Any suggestions? Very little substantive advice on Google. Thank you.

How did you get the images moved to the external hard drive? It sounds like you used Windows Explorer to move them and then used LR to find and re-catalog those images on the external drive. To move the images correctly from your PC's internal hard drive to the external drive, you should grab the folders and drag them to the external. You will see them move and the catalog will have updated itself leaving none of the images on the PC's internal drive.

All you can do now is physically check to make sure that you have all the images you want archieved on the external drive, then using LR, highlight each folder on the C drive or the PC's internal drive you don't want them on, and hit 'delete'. LR will prompt you to delete the images from the catalog, or completely delete them from your drive and catalog. Like I said, make sure the images are on the external drive first, and then delete them from the internal using LR. The catalog will be updated showing no image on the internal drive.
