I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. My SD reader has quit working. I use Picasa for my photo work. I have done the usual stuff, (disable/enable, optimized performance, checked for updates, etc) no luck. Thinking about buying external reader. Researching for best reviews, but will I lose any picture quality with external reader as opposed to replacing internal one? OH, yeah my camera is Nikon D-60, using fine setting. Am still confused about RAW setting, but learning from Ugly Hedgehog contributors

Could be the reader or the port or the software. I also had a reader go bad. Are you using SDHC cards when you weren't before? My old card reader wouldn't read those, had to get a new one when I bought new cards. Also, my computer's "old" OS won't import HD video from my P&S camera, so I use the standard size video until I upgrade computer OS.

No change in cards. Using ATP 2GB and Kingston 4GB cards. Computer does not even acknowledge insertion of card. I'm guessing reader or software is shot. And wouldn't you know it, the warranty expired 5 days ago. :x

In your place, I would use the cable and link the camera directly to the USB port of the PC. That should do the trick.

External works just as well. After my card reader died, I just hooked the camera up to my USB and downloaded that way. USB is all I use now unless I am using the printer (without the computer) at an event.

It's ten times faster thru a card reader than your camera. Card readers are less than $20, its worth it.

I only use an external, and have been through three readers so far. Unless you camera is very strange an byte transfer is just that. you take 12.6 megapixels you will transfer 12.6 megapixels.

PS. My Lenovo W500 does not see large cards either, It does not like SDHC, But my reader connected to the same computer does.

Absolutely not. The file transferred will be the EXACT SAME FILE regardless of the transfer method.

Ireplied to a similar post recently and as I stated before.....I bent a pin inside my desktop tower , thus, preventing the card reader from working properly....that may be your culprit. good luck....and btw I saw no difference using an external card reader.

You will not lose quality with an external reader. Many older machines and even external readers will simply not handle the newer cards. It could be capacity of the card, the speed or simply wear and tare on the input slot. Get an external reader and you will be fine.
