Greetings all,
I almost have enough photos saved up to justify getting a website.
Currenty I use Picasa and send the links to family and friends.
I'm looking at the Smugmug and Betterphoto pro websites.
They both look very similar as far as what is offered but one is $150.00/yr and the other is $349.00/yr.
Can anyone explain why one might be better than the other?
What about other sites? This is becoming a difficult decision.
Of course the price is a significant factor in the decision.
Thanks for any advice.

If you're just planning on using the site so that friends and family have easy access, I would go with flickr. A pro account is $25 a year. or Free up to 200 photos.

You can also use a WordPress blog for $0. Very easy to use. You get 3 GB of space; as long as you are not posting high-rez files this will go a long way. You can always create more blogs if you exhaust that 3 GB - perhaps a blog for each year.

Willy, I have had total satisfaction with Smugmug.
They are reliable, if you have questions their service is
excellent and you can upload an infinity of shots for about
$125/year.

I use Zenfolio. I got it for 90.00 a year, which is the second highest level called the premium site. It gives your work a professional look and is easy to set up. You are also connected to a lab and buyers can purchase photos directly from the site.
You can try it for 2 weeks for free.
Give it a look.

I have used dropshots for a few years now. For $100 you get a lifetime of usage and you can upload as much as you want. (I believe, unless they have changed things.) You can also use it for free up to a certain amount, not sure what that is. But I like the organization and think it's really easy to use.

I have a flickr for the bulk of my photos, and I have a smugmug account for photos I want to sell. So unless you intend to set prices and sell photos, I wouldn't bother with smugmug or any site like that. Just go with google for your photos or flickr; something like that.

Spending money to get your photos on line when you are starting out doesn't seem like the best idea. We don't really know what it is you want to accomplish r if you have any sort of business or marketing plan. Unless you have money to burn, get something up there for as little as possible and get a feeling for what is going on.
A lot of people have spend small fortunes on websites shopping carts, and photo sites with little or no return.

From the original message it looks like the need is not for business, but more of a personal nature: "Currenty I use Picasa and send the links to family and friends."

I agree Sensei - I wouldn't spend any money if at all possible. There are so many free options out there.

I take a lot of pictures of West Point Cadets I have often put them up at Walmart and given their families the link so they could get them printed locally in any size or quantities they want. I generally hand one print to each cadet, in the picture.

I print a fair amount through Walmart as well; or my customers do - they are everywhere. For my other needs, Wordpress is free and easy to use. You can pay for additonal feature like more space, domain name, themes (plenty of free ones), etc., but you don't have to. I use it for proofing with client. You can easily create a password protected page and upload the proofs to share with your client - free. Love it.

Have you tried Zenfolio? They are pretty good. I don't have it, but I know several people who do, and like it.
