New Printer

The old HP all in one gave up the ghost, and now is in perpetual paper jam heaven. I bought it right after Hurricane Katrina, and used it heavy for photos, text, scanning and copier. It seems the output rollers are toast. I decided to buy a new photo printer to take its place. I've selected a Canon Pixma MG 8220. I want to know if any of you used this printer, and what you think about it. Does it have any quirks that I should look out for? I'm looking forward to get rid of all the wires on my desk since it is a Wi Fi enabled printer. I just wish my 50D was Wi Fi.

Have you considered Epson, they have some very good photo printers. Also, you may want to think economics and have your printing done outside a .06 or .07 cents per 4x6 and less than $3.00 for an 8x10 at Costo Price Club or others.

Recently, I purchased the MG6220, as my older all-in-one primer was fading fast. The principal difference between the 8220 and 6220 is the number of print tanks.

While there are better photo printers on the market, a) they are somewhat pricier, and b) like you, I wanted the copy / scan features. Wireless, duplex printing, and CD/DVD printing were nice additions. The finer print produces much nicer photos than from my older all-in-one. The one knock is that print tanks can drain fast if a lot of printing is done.

All in all, I think you'll like your new printer.

If you want to salvage your old printer, often cleaning the rollers with alcohol will enable them to grip the paper again.

I would like to get it working again. I'll try the alcohol trick. I'm sure that trick will only be temporary since the printer is old, and well used. I may look locally for a repair shot too.

I got such a great deal at B&H on the new Canon printer. The mg 8220 lists everywhere for more than $200, I got mine for $124. I bought new ink tanks from ebay about 1/2 the price. The ink is Canon. I'm looking forward to better photo prints.

I have the Canon MG8120 and have done a lot of printing, and scanning of old slides. I have no issues with the printer. The color of my prints through LR4 are extraordinary. I use only Canon Ink whereas before I used third party Ink and had a lot of color shifting. I'm sure you'll like the MG8220

My HP did the same thing. I got silly and bought an Epson Artisan; had it six weeks and took it back. It smeared ink, was not user friendly, no card paper would fit the tray. awful. However, even though it was past the return date, Office Max did me well and made an exchange. I now have an HP 7520 Photosmart all in one. It's great!

Viva la Office Max for being customer friendly!!

I purchased the 8220, and I really like the way it prints. I do set the photos on "vivid color" sometimes, depending on the paper I'm using. I was disappointed that it won't print nicely on watercolor paper, which is my favorite one. Canvas paper is iffy also, which is my second favorite. As long as you stick with standard glossy paper, you'll get really bright, sharp prints. The ink is expensive and disappears quite rapidly. It's cheaper to print at Costco, but if I need a print in a hurry the 8220 does a really good job.

I'll be going to Costa Rica, in a few weeks. I will be going to the North end, near all the volcanoes. I want to get some really great shots, and print them once I return. I also have an idea for a portrait business, that I'll explore after my return.

I have the Pixma MG 5320, a three way, and so far I'm having very good luck with it. I've been using Canon printers for several years and only recently my last Pixma gave it up and I replaced it with this... so far no complaints about Canon printers. Good Luck

I also have the Pixma and I love it. Great results. The only downside is the ink cartridges are small ans you go through a lot of ink printing at home.

I like Canon printers very much, and the all-in-one you propose is a VG Value. That being said, IMHO all-in-ones do not print photos as well as machines that are designed expressly for that purpose. More ink colors, finer dots, and the ability to maximize quality for specific papers all contribute to a more striking print. Also, if you think you'll ever want to make large prints, you should get a medium-format printer now (again, my choice would be a Canon.) That printer will dumb down for correspondence, scans, etc, but all-in-ones will not wise up to the best photo quality.
