Somebody posted a utube video of what appears to be an old car rally featuring a collection 10-12 gas stations within shouting distance of the videographer! Very unusual (Esso, Citiservice, Sunoco, etc.). No idea where it was filmed.

Yea - remember one guy giving me a walk-through on how to propetly clean the windshield. He was quite proud of and serious about his technique. That was the competition then - the pump-side service.
Saw a couple .25/9 gas in there. I remember when I refused to pump my own gas.. I wouldn't get far today...Thanks for sharing.
Gas price under 35 cents per gallon, and you got your windshield washed with any purchase and the oil checked. If you filled you got all the outside glass washed, the oil and water checked and the tires too. For $4.00 you get to do it yourself. Oh, yes that is called progress. The dealer used to make a pretty good living with a margin of about 5 cents from which he paid about a half to 1 cent in rent. They make about the same ratio today with 12 dispensers and only 1 employee, and no back room.
Paying £1.35p a litre here at the moment.
Did I see an Oldsmobile in one of the earlier photos? An american friend of mine serving at the Chicksands air base in Bedford UK, had one of the imported for his tour over here, we used to go out together regularly in it, so it brings back nice memories for me also..
What Fun! I tried to tell what year the picture was taken by finding the newest car in the photo. Even saw a Nash Metropolitan (Made by Morris, in UK).
I remember gas at .12 cents during "gas wars" (reg. 17 cents), you don't see gas wars anymore! Aahhhh......
The Bomber was my gas station back in college Payed 11.9 cents a gallon Remember the gas wars?

wow, I love the architecture of 1940's and 50's gas stations . a great theme for a coffee table book. To me it is sad to see so many closed and abandoned gas stations. the 1st two photos of a Texaco station is from west palm beach fl on the grounds of the county fairgrounds . They have a whole village of classic buildings, I also recommend the henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Mich for great cars and memorabilia like holiday inn signs, gas stations, early McDonald's etc. The last photo while not a gas station is still interesting. That is a McDonald's rest stop built over the Oklahoma turnpike. The floors were solid glass so you could look down on the traffic.
Thanks, Auclair784. I'm wondering what became of that B-17 in the first photo.
Think the newest was a 64 or 65 Mustang.
