I don't own a battery grip for my Canon, but I know a couple of male friends who have them, they say adding the grip helps make the camera feel more comfortable in their hands as it makes the camera body bigger.

To me, it just adds more weight. I use it so I can shoot in the portrait mode, and when I do that, I have it on a monopod as well. Otherwise, I don't need to carry one more ounce of weight. I fear already that if I fell into a lake with my camera gear in my back pack that I would sink like a stone.
