Evidently, I was all wrong. I've been doing this for years and been in photography for about 35 years, but evidently, that doesn't make me a skilled photographer.
To be a sports photographer, you just have to be able to afford better equipment. I've just been lucky with the cheaper stuff.

So it doesn't have anything to do with knowledge of light, shutter speed, or how to take a white balance. Buy a better camera and put it all on automatic. No skill is necessary.

Hey thanks for your help
I am struggling with a 18-105mm F/5.6 Nikon lens with a D 90 Camera
and using a mono pod which helps alot. and a sb600 flash which really complicated things. But your ISO idea is great I'm going to raise it to see the sharpness. I want to see the name clearly on the ball

I have a D90 Nikon with 18-135mm lens1:35:5.6G
I went out of town at night to shoot a monument from a moving car and first of all my camera didn't even trigger. then I raised the ISO to 1600 and it was blurry so then raised the speed to 1000
The picture came out too dark but by the time that happened the we passed the monument . I was pissed I need a rule of thumb to set the camera at quick notice.

You are right , I need better equippment that I can't afford
but unfortunately I have been hired to shoot sports games inside and they love my pictures but I know they are out of focus or dark they don't see it
I'm glad of that, but I feel guilty of not having quality pics.
I haven't found the right combination yet except at the Staple center the lighting is good.
but any other auditorium the bad light is not helping while the players are running at you and you try to shoot as fast as you can. GEEZE I need help.
