loaned a couple filters to a friend, when they came back they looked like the had an FBI collection of prints and smudgees on them.
I tried to clean them with microfiber cloths, nuttin. I do not want to use anything agressive to damage the coating (Hoya filters) any suggestions would be appreciated.
I already banned him from using any of my equipment, and he is healing nicely :/

Zeiss Lens Wipes, I get mine at Walmart, then clean with a micro fiber cloth after removing the smudges with the wipe.

Could also use a lens pen. They are safe for prime lens, so should be very good for filters also!

Mix one teaspoon of Windex in one cup of warm water. Use a finely woven cloth or microfiber lens cloth dabbed in the solution and work in small circles until the filter is clean. If the fingerprints appear to be greasy, use three drops of Dawn in one cup of warm water. You can store the left over solution(s) in a small plastic bottle until needed again. Yes, it's old-fashion and not as sexy as the wipes mentioned above but you probably have both products in your house (save the gas money for a new lens) and you get the job done now instead of tomorrow or later.

a number of people on here have mentioned them, so I got one and am VERY impressed with how well they work. Use it on my SX40 when needed.

Do not use Windex with amonnia in it unless you want to destroy your filters coating.

Eclipse fluid and pec pads, as used for sensor cleaning. It leaves a lens spotless and sparkling.
