The 30 second online video ad

Increasingly, online videos (of any length) start with a 30 second advertisement. My habit used to be; click on interesting titles, find myself watching maybe 10 or 15 seconds of the video, deciding “naah,” and going somewhere else. Now, more often than not, the video starts with a 30 second ad and, more often than not, I click it away video unseen. The title has to fight with the ad for my attention and commonly loses.

If I do a Youtube search for a particular topic, the same 30 second dreck precedes each video in the group and the question becomes, “How many will I tolerate before the search is abandoned?”

Nothing is free, ads pay for content but, at my age, I no longer have a 30 second attention span. As the seconds in my life tick away;15 is about my limit.

How many others are as put off by these long ads as I am?

Sorry, but you said it correctly - nothing is free. YouTube is in business to make money, not entertain us for free. How do you propose that they make up for the lost revenue if they eliminate ads? Would you rather YouTube charge a monthly subscription fee? Thirty seconds of my time is a small price to pay for what they offer, in my opinion.

Cluster ads - located on the page close to the online videos - actually receive more hits than the video ads themselves. Examples are right here on the hog; they're also demo'd to attract certain viewers. These clever marketing folks.

I read this and thought it was something terribly trivial to complain about.
Do you not have the ability to multi-task?
I usually have several tabs open, so I look at something else till the video starts.
How much more simple could it be?

How come the videos I watch give me a choice after about 4 second to close the add and go to the video?

I find very few videos I'm willing to watch a 30 second commercial for no matter how clever the title. I usually hit the return button. If that isn't fast enough I hit the kill button. Of course you all are free to watch all of them you like.

Interesting trade-off. No one, myself included, is intere sted in or wants to be bothered with an ad for something we have no interest in.
However, my eyes and ears are glued when the ad is about something I'm thinking of doing or byuying...how about yours?

OH GOOD LORD, techmath. I actually agree with you on this one....Let's not make a habit of that (I'll start feeling like a leftist liberal)..LOL. I too am annoid by the adds, but, it is how they get paid. And, no, I wouldn't want to pay for those videos.

I just went to you tube and checked a few of the most popular videos of the day...and stand a little bit corrected...some of them do have full 30 second ads in front..but like sarge said...almost all I watch...(I am a pretty boring guy) have the option to leave these ads in 4 seconds...lower right part of the screen...hmmmm

i just mute the volume and wait. but you are right they are everywhere. But nothing is more irritating then going to popphoto.com and before you can scroll the whole screen gets replaced with a darn ad for canon cameras. I like the banner ads. If you are interested just click, if not just ignore.

I agree. Its bad enough we have to sit through them on tv. If I cant hit them off in 4 sec I move on. Most of that stuff is all crap anyway.

My observation:
If the video you are about to watch is of so little importance that you will abort rather than sit through the ad, you must ask yourself - are they BOTH not just wasting your time? If so, what's the difference?

Disclaimer: This is just my humble opinion, which is mostly a waste of time also.
