I was ready to buy a canon sx50 but read some user reviews that said the slow shutter speed response was so problematic that many good shots were lost. I like to take candid and spontaneous photos and a slow shutter response time could be a disqualifier...thoughts? P510 vs SX 50? RAW is not an issue for me...

I've been on and off forums for quite some time now. I think most anyone will tell you that only dslr cameras have the kind of fast shutter response you're looking for. Bridge cameras, like the xs50 are slower than dslr cameras and pocket toys are slower that bridge cameras... it seems part of the nature of the beast.
Most good dslr cameras, from Canon or Nikon, have a shutter response that can be measured in milli seconds as opposed to 1 or 2 seconds.
Good Luck
I don't know about the '50 - my 30 will miss about 1 out of 100 because of shutter response; this is on real twitchy little birds and squirrels. I find that a lack of low lite capability is more a problem than shutter response.
