Hello being in the cooking trade I found out that the one must have culinary encyclopedia is "Laroussse Gastronomique" When it came to my hobby of photography the book that taught me anything was "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Now I need to know the guru book on lighting using strobes, props, light metering, ratios with diagrams, well you get the "picture". (I am so funny, NOT!) Thank you for any input.

IMO David Hobby created a monster with the Strobist flickr group, but my goodness he is one heck of a photographer, and this guide is pure gold:

If you want a book, then Fil Hunter's 'Light Science & Magic' is a must have for any photographer's book shelf.
