Canon 60D with Canon 580EX speedlite flash

After using the external flash for a few pic's, I removed the external flash from the camera. Now the built-in flash no longer works. ( Error message" Cannot use internal flash, as external flash is still mounted" )

I've never gotten that message on my 40D. Try removing the battery and then replacing it, but that would be a pain to do every time you want to use the pop up. I suggest you call Canon. Their service and support are supposed to be pretty good. I've not had to use them. Hope all goes well for you.

I had the same problem with my 60D. When I called Canon they had me try something that worked!!!!
Inside the shoe mount are 2 tiny micro switches which are stuck. take something small, preferably not metal, and lift them up. You will be bending them back into place.
I only had to fix this once and it's still working fine

That's great information as I am just about to purchase a speedlite for my 60D. When you say shoe mount, do you mean on the flash itself or the camera, just to clarify for myself? And how far do you lift them up?

On the camera, on the shoe mount, under the right side rail. GENTLY lift the spring finger up a little in the middle ( you should be able to see the tip of the black switch), but ONLY if you get the problem! I Repeat lifting until problem is corrected. I repeat GENTLY lift the spring finger !

I had the same problem and also with Nissin.....you can lift up small plate on the hotshoe with your fingernail(just a small amount and it will let you use the built in flash) or send it back to Canon and it takes 3 weeks. They don't always get it fixed the first time. You can easily do it but it is a pain in the tail to continue doing it.......

The micro switches are on the camera's hot shoe, NOT the flash. When they are stuck in the down position the camera THINKS there is a flash unit in the shoe.

Ok, had to get my glasses on for this but I think I see the tiny black dot under the spring thingy. The spring doesn't look that far up to begin with so I imagine you are not lifting it up very much. Good to know. Thanks, hopefully I won't encounter that problem but at least I will know what's causing it.
