I'm thinking of getting the Tamrom 18-270mm lens for my Nikon. I'll be using it mostly as a walk around lens for travelling.
Does anyone have this that can give me some feedback.

it all depends on what quality you want..i purchased it then returned it when i found that it did not have a constant f stop..also when i compared it to my other tamron lens which is a 28-75mm (which has terrific detail) i found that it lacked detail when enlarged..i wanted a bit more zoom so i just recently ordered the nikon 24-120mm for my walk around..i hardly ever would use more than that range...and the quality was far superior ..i mostly ask MTshooter for advice and he really knows his stuff..

Perhaps you ordered the nikon 24-120? Did you get the 3.5-5.6 variable aperture of the f/4.0?

I have an older model of this lens which I like a lot. No problems except when I fell with it. It will cost about $150 to fix but it was my fault. I have gotten good, quick, responsive service from Tamron. That is important as I've heard complaints about other companies on this forum.

That's what I use for my walkaround lens. It allows me to get most shots. If the subject gives me time to change lenses (to a 35mm prime, 105 macro, or a Bigma 50-500) then I will make the change. The Tamron is like the Swiss army knife of lenses - what it may lack in quality it makes up for in versatility.

The Tamron 18-270 is a compromise for convience. It is a good lens given it's huge zoom ratio - and it can compete well with zooms of slightly lesser ratio. But if you are serious about IQ - the zoom ratio will have to come significantly down. I am using/liking the Sigma 17-70, and even it is somewhat marginal for me.

I bought the Tamron 18-270 last Spring to take with me on a cruise. My 50D came with boat load of "Kit" lenses of all sizes, and my bag weighed a ton. I got rid of the excess lenses, and bought the Tamron. You do give up a bit of image quality for the zoom range. I did notice after careful examination, and pixel peeping the lens shot "soft" at the high end, and at the very low end. You cannot count the lens down and out for this. I sent it back to Tamron just before Christmas, and got a email back that I was correct in my analysis. The lens was taken apart, and found manufacturing debris inside. The lens was then sent to calibration and will be returned. Also, the lens is warrantied for 6 years. I'm awaiting its return. Take a look at this lens review in "the-digital-picture.com" The reviewer works for himself, and does not have a dog in the fight. The Tamron is a "good" lens, but you have to give up some IQ as a walk-around.

It's a GREAT walk around lens. Great all around lens for newspapers.

If you want great detail for a blow up you would be better off with a good fixed lens.
