Pentax Lens Question

I am currently using a Pentax 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens and a Pentax 55-300mm f4-5.8 lens. I am thinking about getting a Pentax 17-70mm f4 lens and a Pentax 60-250mm f4 lens. Has anyone used these lens and if you have, is there a noticeable difference in the image quality and sharpness? How does the 18-55mm compare to the 17-70mm and how does the 55-300mm compare to the 60-250mm? I know the reviews say that the f4 lens are sharper but is the sharpness really noticeable? Did you say WOW this is alot sharper or did you say this is not much better than my old lens? Thanks for any information you can give me about this. Jerry

The 17-70 and the 60-250 are built to professional standards. Unless you are making large prints - bigger than 8x12 - you may not see any difference, especially if you only view your shots on screen.

I have the 17-70 and it's good. I don't have the cheaper kit lens so I can't tell you the difference, but I would venture a guess and say that if you are a novice, you probably won't notice the difference - if you are a pro, you will.

As I said, I have this lens, but I never use it. I always use my 18-250 and am perfectly happy with my results. If you decide you'd like to get the 17-70, I will offer you mine for $450 free ship, and it looks like brand new, including box and lens covers etc. Hardly ever used. I don't use it enough to justify keeping it.

Glad to see a Pentax guy on here for a change!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, they cost alot of money so I am still trying to decide if I want to get them or not. But if they are not sharper, then I probably won't.

All of these shot on a K10d with a Tamron 28/105. It's virtually all I use! Incidently, don't be afraid nor too proud to explore the legit used market. Here in Houston we have Houston Camera Exchange, which pushes a lot of new C&E but has a great inventory to suit us on a budget! Bet you have something like that in your area.

I would be surprised if there is not a good, well stocked retailer, who doesn't look at you funny, when you ask for a "K mount AF lens for a Pentax" body! Also check the Pop. Photog Mag ads and Google Houston Camera Exchange. Don't be in a hurry to pick the first thing you try---and if there should be a near by retailer, ie Hot Springs or Little Rock or perhaps Memphis---have your camera with you and check them out Good luck.---and Happy New Year
