high shutter speed, focus on the eyes, no flash.
Depth of field is not an issue so you can shoot f/4 f/5.6.

If you need a couple stops, kick the iso up to 400-800

Hi Bill. What gear do you have? What's your experience / skill level?

I use Canon dslr cameras and this shot was taken using a 50mm f/1.8 lens in available in home window light at ISO 200 hand held at 1/30th of a second. Good Luck

Hi Bill. What I do when taking photos like this is set my shutter at 1/200 to help avoid Robert's movement. He and I had a discussion about not moving when grandpa has the camera but I don't think it took... tee, hee.
But in the case of the shots below I used the program setting and let the camera decide. If you're meter tells you that the shutter is too slow to avoid movement blur, as in 1/50 or so, then boost you ISO to 400 and your shutter to 1/200 and give it a try.

In shutter priority I, as I said, set to 1/200 and let the camera decide the rest. If the window light is bright enough at times I'll come in at 2.5 but generally the aperture ends up at 1.8.

In fact this is the way I've been shooting all my grand kids... as in below.
Again available in home window light.

Another good technique, if she's available, have grandma cradle your grandchild in her hands like my wife did. Sit her near a large window. Then all grandma, or mom, has to do is capture the child's gaze, you shoot over her shoulder and your grand child probably won't even know you're there... as in the second and third shots.

Remember also that your DOF (depth of field) will be very short perhaps less than an inch. You can see that in the second shot and even a little in the third.

I don't know about you but I set my camera to single point focus, dead center. That way just place that point over the child's eye and shoot perhaps, oh I average, about 60 to 100 shots and because babies love to constantly move, I may get 5 or 6 - but that's still successful.

Good luck
