Moving on UP!

Hi Folks:
I have been involved in photography since the early 60's I have shot 125 weddings professionally. Won some awards way back when. Made the switch from Graflex XL to Maymiya 2 1/4 square, to Nikon last F2, then switched to Canon A2e print film. Just a few months after the A2e was bought Digital came into being.
I suffered along and finally realized that digital was better and here to stay!!
Bought a canon 10D because I had such an investment in lenses. Just this week repair shop said that he could not repare my bD10 because he could not get a Mother Board from Canon for it?
My question is simply this??
Should I get a Canon 7D or a 60D? I also have a Sony DSC- RX 100 for just carrying around which I love!
I live in South Florida and shoot mostly the things retired people shoot. Butterflies, Birds, GreatGrandChildren, Landscapes, small groups, etc.
I very much value the various input I have read since my membership on UHH and would certainly appreciate any assistance You may provide!
Much Obliged,
Sonny

Hey Sonny, the 7D is an amazing camera, but for what you do it is a close call. The 7D wins in the weather and at speed, otherwise the 60D is a handful too with a flip-out screen that might be nice for what you do. Tie the 60D in with some really nice lenses and you may have a winner!

The 7D is an amazing camera. It is generally considered a semi-professional camera body. There will be a fairly steep learning curve with it considering the early beginners camera you are coming from.

The 60D's big thing is the lcd witch can be pivoted. It does not have many of the features of the 7D does though. You can compare the two cameras at:

Good luck with your choice.

Hi Sonny, For what you are into I'd tend to lean to the 60D. Why, all the lenses you have will fit perfectly. (I'm sure you know this) The camera will shoot video. With grandchildren that will be a big plus. The camera is advanced, but not out the window from the 10D you parted with. Oh, on the 10D, you could go on ebay and find a used 10D with a low shutter count and be back with the same equipment, with minimal expense, and no learning curve.

Enjoy your retirement.

Hi Sonny, I have both the 60D and the 7D and love them both, I shot 80,000 photos with the 60D which I had first, upgraded to the 7D and now the 60D is my back up camera. If price is not an issue the 7D is a better camera but is a little more money. I do a lot of landscape and wildlife photography and like the build quality of the 7D better and also 8frames verses 5frames per second. Hopefully this helps, you will enjoy either one.

Bill: Thank You so much for your response to my query.

Will my lenses also fit the D7? I just took forgranted they would also fit it?
I am leaning toward the D7 because I am outside a lot and also on the ocean and everglades where conditions are quite damp to say the least?
I have an early Canon 17x35 f2 Red Ring lens which happens to be my favorite and almost my go-to lens because it is so sharp! I believe it was listed at over $4k back in it's day?
I would hate to have to give it up because of progress or just dumb mistake?
Again, thanks for Your response back to me!
Cordially,
Sonny

The 60D and 7D are both crop sensors and accept the EF and EF-S lenses.

If the lens is a Canon EOS, the lens will fit any Canon EOS Camera. If the "red line lens" is a FD, (for film cameras) you will need an adapter, and you will loose AF. If you are defiantly going to make the "move" and have enough money left over, I would buy a new or used Canon "L" lens in your favorite size. These lenses are identified by the red ring around the focus ring. The larger telephotos, and larger zoom have a white body. Canon no longer makes the 17-35mm, or it does not show up in their line up. I would suggest EF 28-135mm L, or non L usm to go with your new camera. That size will cover all your mid range telephoto shots. The difference will be about $1000 between the L and non L plus f stops.

Thank You so very much for Your responses. I have found so much knowledge here on UHH. Everyone seems to be so helpful on almost any photography question that I read.
I am working on a deal which should allow me to get whichever camera and L lense I decide on and I am leaning toward the D7 because of the current pricing level at most of our best supplies?
Again, Thanks!

Deals are great, but if it comes to it also consider refurbished models. Canon sells them directly on their website. http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subCategory_10051_10051_-1_29252

Try craigslist. I used it to buy my 7D for $900.00. I am including the link to the camera that I bought, to show that with a little patience, you cam make a good deal.

It helps that my son lives in Vancouver, and also has a 7D. He was able to run it through a battery of test, before making the purchase. I also bought a beautiful 24-105 for $800.00, off of craigslist

That is a great price. Canon has them refurbished with for just over $1000 http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_260463_-1
and Costco has a 7D package deal for $1600 http://www.costco.com/Canon-EOS-7D-DSLR-Camera-with-28-135mm-Lens.product.100014084.html?catalogId=10701&keyword=canon+7d&langId=-1&storeId=10301
