Return it to Canon for repairs after the first of the year while it is still under warranty.

Have you been using a Black Rapid strap (or similar strap that attaches to the tripod mount)?

Maybe the tripod mounting screw is too long and pushing up onto the baseplate of the camera causing a short????

Sounds like maybe the tripod screw is too long and may be shorting out the circuitry.

That's a tricky one. If Canon finds out that the tripod screw was causing the problem, there goes the warranty. I'd think you would really have to force that screw in there to cause damage, though.

Come to think of it, modern electronics don't have many wires.

Is there a potential problem with those? On Nikons?

My wife recently bought one and plans to use it on her D5100.

Hi, First, I would measure the height of the tripod screw above the plate. If the screw height is normal, I would give Canon a call. Explain the problem, and tell them it is the second time around for this problem. The problem may not be the screw, but other stresses on the body could cause a loose solder joint, internal plug, or twisting of a circuit card with a bad joint to fail. In any event engineers would like a report on this problem to improve the design.

I looked at two of my tripod plates, and the threads seem to 1/4x20, with 3 1/2 threads showing above the plate. It looks a bit less than 1/4 inch.

I bought a cheap tripod and have the plate thingy screwed into the bottom of my T3i and have been carrying it around like that for nearly a month. Still haven't used the tripod, but the LCD screen is A-OK.

Both Canon and Nikon have stated that the tripod socket is NOT meant to hold the camera in an upside down position and bouncing along hanging off your shoulder. I have seen 2 cameras with the tripod hole stripped out because of it, one Pentax and one Sony (onlt the Sony hit the ground but was saved by the snow it fell into). I have read about other cameras where the tripod socket has been broken clear out of battery grips from these straps. The potential for camera failure is way too high for me to consider using that tripod socket for something it was never meant to do.
