Canon SX30is User's Manual

I am still wading thru the manual and grow increasingly frustrated. Years ago, I had a Nikin Coolpix and there was a wonderful field guide that I purchased at Books-a-Million. Are there any books that can help with the Canon SX30is other than this manual?

I'm like you, I found my SX30IS confusing, as it is the first Canon I've ever owned. This was further complicated by the fact that the manual was not a hard copy, but on the disc. I haven't looked for one of those after market how to books yet, but I bought a printed manual from one of the internet vendors, which lives in my bag.

What I do is set up for a specific operation, say macro, then practice in my yard for an hour or two, using the manual and trying out the different possibilities.

I bought a great book for SX30is thru Amazon. It's "A Short Course In Canon Powershot SX30 IS Photography" by Dennis Curtain. The book and instructions are in B&W, but it comes with a CD that's in color with animations to illustrate some techniques. I copied sections of the CD (in color) for the the parts I want to reference often. The book is not actually set up as a course per se, but it will give you all the information you want, explained so one can really understand it. I highly recommend it.
I hope this helps!

If you can "open" a disk version of a manual in MS Word, Open Source (i.e. free) OpenOffice Writer, or Open Source (i.e. free) Libra Office Writer, you can save relevant portions as PDFs. If you have the right smartphone or tablet computer, you can store your PDFs on them and refer to them in the field when you need to refresh your memory. If you can't pare a PDF version of a manual down, why not store the whole thing on your smartphone or tablet? A PDF is information and this is the Information Age. And just like Number Two in "The Prisioner," what we all want is, "In-for-may-shun. In-for-may-shun. In-for-may-shun. In-for-may-shun."

You can get a one page cheat sheet from PhotoBert for the SX30-IS. It won't help to understand everything, but provides the quick clues you might need after reading the manual. I don't have this cheat sheet, but I had one for a different model and I thought it was worth the money (about $10??).

Amazon has these at --

Good luck - John

You obviously haven't seen this manual - it starts out in a 5 font, and then is written in Engrish, and complicates that by neglecting to state that the instructions "Only work in Manual or Program mode". The worst thing, though, for me is that every control is not referred to by name, but by an icon, and, being a 5 font, is indecipherable. Having it with you on a 2.8 inch screen would not help. Having it on my 19-inch monitor is only marginally better. Let's go look for a tutorial, eh ?
