I have a lady friend that has a Nikon D3000 and wants a camera that has a live view. Can I get her a Nikon D5000 body and have her use her lenses from her D3000. By the question I'm sure you can tell this is all new to me ! If any one can steer me in a better direction I would love to listen to that too. Thanks

If its in the budget, look at going all the way to the D5200 or even the D7000. The lenses will work on either.

Threatening, if Nikon is anything like Canon, and the D 5000 is a full frame camera you should be fine. You can ask the camera guy before you buy also, if it is a reputable store they should steer you in the right direction.

Good Luck

Jim

The Nikon D5000 is not a full frame camera. Nor is the D3000, D5200 or D7000. The lenses on her D3000 will work on any of them.

The D5200 is scheduled for release in January 2013. It has a 24Mp APS-C sensor, already in use on other, successful cameras.

The D5100 has a 16-Mp APS-C sensor, and is on sale by Nikon for $450.00

Prepare yourself for the D5200 body only to come in at about $900

Lots of people are talking about the D3200/D5200 at the moment. The big drawback of squeezing all those 24MP on a crop sensor is the huge increase in noise compared to the current 16.2MP sensor in the D5100 and D7000.

I'd go for a D5100 or, if the budget allows, the D7000.

Sensor noise due to increase pixel count has not been a problem with Sony (Nikon) sensors. That is a problem with the other major sensor manufacturer, used by the other major camera company. If you have documentation supporting your "noise" claim about 24Mp Nikon camera sensors, please post it here. Opinion, yours or others, do not constitute fact nor documentation.

There are numerous images which show a significant difference in noise performance between the 24MP and 16MP sensors. I don't need documentation - a couple of minutes on Google will provide all of the evidence you need.

Wow, where was your documentation when you posted loads of inflammatory nonsense about the D600 "oil issue" or your post on the complexity of changing a plastic lens mount with all that soldering and stuff that wasn't needed?

This place seems to be full of self-proclaimed photography experts who spend a lot of time posting erroneous and misleading information and then insulting or abusing those who disagree with them.

Goodbye UHH, I'm out of here......
