Hi,
I have a Canon 7d. My husband and I are starting to travel more and I was thinking about a new lens to capture landscapes while we camp and travel. We have trips to Florida, Blue Ridge Parkway, and South Dakota planned for 2013. I have a lens for wildlife and Macro.
What do you think would be a good lens for my need?
Thanks

I have an older Canon with the same size sensor, and I use a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 for landscapes. It does a fantastic job with incredible depth of field, color, and sharpness. I got mine used from KEH Photo, about half the price of a new one and in perfect condition. A pro photog acquaintance of mine has a couple of these for outdoor shots and says that they are as good as lenses costing much more.
I use a Canon 70-200 2.8 L is and really like it, but there are lots of good ones out there. As you can see I use this lens for everything. Have fun. Bee

I second this opinion. I have a Canon 60D. I bought this lens (Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6) last month for a trip we took to Sedona and Grand Canyon. I bought the lens used on Ebay and am very happy with it. Here are a few shots I used this lens on.
As a knock about/walk about type lens on crop frame I like the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 and is reasonably priced.
For Landscapes you should take a look at the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. The EF-S lenses are designed to work with the 1.6X crop factor APS-C bodies and that particular lens has been reviewed as having image quality similar to an "L" lens. It gives very sharp images with very little distortion.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend.
I'd look into the Canon 16-35 2.8L &/or the 24-105 f/4L
The 24-105 is my favorite lens.
For vacations, I use a Tamron 18-270mm. Nice sharp lens and for the money great for my needs (mostly landscape). But great to zoom in on wildlife too.
Great shots, thanks for sharing. Bee
Hi Bee7474, I shoot with a Canon 50D, and it is mated to a Tamron 18-270mm zoom. I bought it to clear out some of the extra lenses that came with my camera. I bought it in time to take it on a European cruise. I took some pictures around New Orleans before we left just check it out and see how it performed. It did great, both in New Orleans, and on the cruise. I took over 1000 shots in Europe, and with few exceptions, due to photographers error, all were keepers. I took landscapes, close-ups, and monuments. I took it on another trip to Washington State, to the Mt. Baker area, and took all sorts of landscape shots, and some forest stuff, The Tamron 18-270 has proved to be a great walk-around lens, with fast focus, sharp glass, and VC. It also comes with a "lens lock" which keeps it from falling out when the lens is carried downward. I think it still comes with a $100 mail in rebate from Tamron. I sent it in, and my check was here in two weeks. Tamron also warrenty their lens for 6 years.
Hi, I must check into Tamron. Thanks Bee
Unless you have an unlimited checkbook and someone else to cary a fifty pound backpack full of lenses, there really is only one answer: Tamron 18-270mm, and maybe a 90mm or 100mm true (1:1) macro.
I envy you your travels. Have fun!
If your interested in the Sigma 10-20mm, B&H has it new on sale until Dec 31 for $429. This includes free shipping. And the Caon 10-22mm on sale for $719.
Usually, people owning a 7D are looking for a higher IQ over the convienience that the Tamron 18-270 delivers.
