I would like to know how to make the water look soft in a waterfall shot or in a rushing river shot.

The longer the exposure time, the more the water will blur. Use a small aperture setting or a neutral density filter and you should be able to get the effect you want.

Also...use a tripod.

The shutter duration for a rushing river depends on whether it's a fast moving or slow moving river. I would recommend beginning with 1/4 sec and going slower from there.

You can use a neutral density filter-- I don't-- I just pick the "right time" of the day or spots with deep shade. There is a forum that specializes in long exposure photography on UHH. I would recommend going there and checking what others have done. I have several examples posted there. Good luck.

I like to do most water at 1/13 s. I learned that from a presentation to our camera club.

It does not give the pillow effect but shows that the water is moving nicely.

Here is an example.

I love doing waterfall shots. I always shoot in shutter priority. When shooting I will take 3 to 5 shots of each composition then chose the shot that gives my what I'm looking for. Here is a shot from Cumber Falls in Ohio Pyle, PA. The shot will show the settings.

You may also want to put an 4-stop Neutral Density filter on your lens. That will allow you to keep the shutter open longer without over exposing the picture.

I find it helpful getting to the location just before the sun comes up, and leaving the shutter open for various lengths of time (using shutter priority) works for me. I can then choose the picture that works the best for that particular waterfall.

I've done some hand-held when I come across flowing water, but it's better with a tripod and ND filter. Here's a buy in ND filters. Highly adjustable, by adding two or three.

Why oh why spoil the wonderful effect of running water by making it look like cotton wool, beats me, leave nature as it is, it looks so so false..............
