Windows 8

I suffered a computer crash and being fed up with Vista, bought the new Windows 8. I can get used to the aps and many other differences but have one very serious problem.

I lost the disk for my 400D and so I would edit my registry in XP or Vista to make folders so that Canon updates would install my EOS Utilities despite not having any actual files. Canon techs are not smart enough to put the original files available for upload and so we found the tick to get around the problem.

Trouble is, I am having serious issues trying to get it to work on windows 8. Anyone have any ideas? I need my camera to link with my computer.

I know the page well. This page has updates that will not install unless you have already installed the disk that came with the camera. I do not have the disk anymore. You can rig the verification system by making empty canon folders in your registry on Windows XP and on Windows Vista but it is not working on Windows 8.

Thanks for trying :)

This appears to be a link to the original DPP software http://www.cdifoto.com/dpp.php
This may help for Photostitch http://download.cnet.com/Canon-Utilities-PhotoStitch/3000-18489_4-199151.html
And this may help for the EOS Utility not listed in the previous page http://download.cnet.com/EOS-Utility/3000-18489_4-201150.html
ImageBrowser EX 1.1.0 is the original on the previous page

Thank you for your help. Just found the solution myself and got up and running again. Just in case anyone finds this topic while having the same issue:

search for regedit in apps. then add the following folders

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\DPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Settings]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Install]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\PhotoStitch]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Capture]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ODSK]

Updates have full version included so as long as they see the folder names, the update will install the full software.

Why not just use a card reader?

That would be too easy. It's so much more adventurous and death defying to dig into registry modifications! I have enough problems keeping my registry clean without getting in it myself.

When I went to my "guru" and trusted friend about all the static Microsoft is sending down about their new product---now this is a guy who's gonna get paid to install, upgrade, and make well, any thing I create---SHOUTED---DO NOT EVEN THINK OF CHANGE FOR A YEAR!!!!That's all I needed. Oh. and by the way, there must be something in your water cuz I am, to use an aviation expression VFR, nomial, and happy as a lark with the old product, XP.

That is a great suggestion, however I shoot tethered and have to have the canon software to do it.

LOL, I feel for you. If I was not tethered, I would not go through all the trouble either. here are some links for your registry if you are interested.

I had Linux a couple times over the years. I think Ubuntu was my last version. I like the system but drivers could be a pain in the tush. Got frustrated and went back to windows. Not that windows is better; it is not. But with 100x as many users, getting problems bypassed was quicker and WINDOWS LOVES HACKERS. :)

The only driver problems I've seen is certain brands of printers. i.e. Canon, and there is a saying: "Ubuntu attracts humans. Windows attracts malware."
