I just got a new small softbox and could not wait to try it out! I was in a hurry and had no available model, so I did a self portrait. I didn't shave, comb my hair or even give a thought to how lousy I looked at the time, but here I am. Please let me know what you all think of the lighting and the photo in general. Feel free to tear it apart. I will not be offended regardless of what you say about my old wrinkly face or my photography.
Thanks
Here's an idea: turn that shadow all the way up, so you have half a face - you will like it, trust me ! Also, do you have a way of mounting a white board at an angle to reflect and fill in on the shadowed side, if you want to go in the other direction. A good start thoughj - a face with character is much more interesting, INO.

Thanks for your reply. I used an umbrella on the shadow side instead of a reflector. Do you think a reflector would do better? Also, the skin color in the original photo looked much better to me than it does here on the Hog. Not sure why.
Trying again to Store Original
Oh, Ok , you already HAVE fill on the shadow side - I missed it at first. Do you think they need to be closer in intensity (Less shadow), or does this work?
Well, honestly I'm not too sure. To me, I wanted some shadow and certainly got it. Without any shadow the lighting would look too flat. I was hoping some of the heavy hitters like PalePictures, Captain C and others would give their opinions. Perhaps they would say my fill light was too weak, too strong, whatever. I believe much of this is subjective, and I appreciate your input, and hope to get others as well. Thanks again.

Good start. I would use a flat reflector, and get it a little closer to your face. Now, I do think you have a nice contrast, so black and white may look perfect. B&W needs more contrast to look right, IMO. Self portraits are the hardest anyway, and I think you have a very good starting point. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your reply. I do very little in B&W, but that is a thought with this shot. Let me know what you think. Also, where exactly should the reflector have been placed?
Thanks Again,
Dave

Pretty dramatic photo that way. I like it.
Yes, thanks for the idea.
