Polaroid Flash for Nikon
I have a Nikon D3000 and I am not to thrilled with the built in flash. I have been looking at getting an accessory flash for the hotshoe, but prices for Nikon brand flashes are beyond my budget. I found an excellent price (under $50US) for the Polaroid PL-108AF Nikon compatible ttl flash unit, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it. I have read about it on the Internet, but I'm really hoping for some real world feedback. Thanks.
:)
I have never used the Polaroids, but a couple local shooters are using the Sunpak Nikon TTL unit with very good results. $59.97 at Walmart.
Metz, Vivitar & Sunpak are major 3rd party brands I have used and I liked them.
(I would rate some Metz units as equal to Nikon models.)
Polaroid is not known for flash prowess.
An excellent price does not always mean an excellent value.
You might like to look at Nissin. The experts rate them as good as Nikon and half the price.
Hi falcon1961,
I've not used that flash but just checked the specs. The guide number is 24 and it uses 2 batteries. It might serve your purposes but the flash is not a high-power unit. I'm not sure which Nikon you'd be using the flash on but it doesn't seem to be much better than your on-board flash. Take care & ...
I bought a Bower TTL (for Nikon) on ebay for around $50. I only use it for situations in which I do not want to have to manipulate the flash output (I normally shoot off-camera with manual flashes with modifiers). That being said, I used it to shoot a fashion show and (except for the sharp shadows), it was spot on all night long. If you're going on camera flash, I have no problem recommending the Bower TTL
The Polaroid brand now means nothing. My daughter bought one of their digital cameras, bad beyond belief. The name just floats around and some one tries to squeeze out what little reputation is left. I would avoid any product with their name on it.
I new many Polaroid employees. The greatness of the company is long gone.
You could even damage your camera if the flash had voltage across the terminal would exceeds the Nikon specification. Probably unlikely theses days, but possible
Nissan, Sun and others have some reasonably priced flash units. I'd look there. Check out the B&H web site.

go to keh.com look at used Nikon flashes. You get nikon quality and reputation, 14 day return policy, 6 month free warranty. Keh has an excellant reputation, If you get a nikon flash you can use what nikon calls I-TTL especialy if you are using nikon lenses.

I used the Sunpack digiflash 3000 that MT Shooter mentioned ($59.99 @ Wal*Mart) with good results for a while, It has manual zoom, pans, and tilts to 90 degrees. Compatible with Nikon's I-TTL. No on-board power output control though.
Sometime you get what you pay for, bite the bullet and get you a good one, you can't go wrong.
