Hey all, I really like the focal length of my Nikon 18-55 but a recent 3 foot fall to a concrete deck now requires replacement. I shoot the D5100 for nature, landscape and occasional archetecture. I am starting to find success selling some photos. Should I just replace the 18-55 str8 up or would something like the sigma 17-70? The nikon 24-70 is too pricey for me right now. Thoughts?
My D5000 with same kit lens fell 2-feet onto a carpeted floor. Two of three plastic mounting flanges broke-off. Repair cost was the same as replacement cost.
I recommend that you look at a zoom lens with a wider range.

I've got the Nikon 16-85mm and find it an excellent lens
Have you given any thought to the 18-105 lens? If you liked your 18-55 I think you will like this lens as well.

I second the motion. To me it is a logical step up from the 18-55mm. ( I have one and I do like it)
Yous guys are great! DB7423 and Charlie is that a Nikon lense?
I think you will see you are on track with the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 - It is the logical choice for you without breaking the bank !
After I broke my 18-55 kit lens, I replaced it with a Nikkor 18-135G. Not fast, but a decent daytime walk-around lens. Affordable on eBay.
My main lens in that range is the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Unfortunately the non-VC version (which I own)is by far the better lens, but it lacks the internal focus motor that you would need for your D5100.
An alternative is the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX DC HSM OS. It's in a different league to the typical Nikon DX kit lenses, has a fast constant f/2.8 aperture, but won't break the bank.
The 24-70 isn't an ideal range for DX (unless you pair it with a 10-24), it's massive (utterly dwarfs the D5100) and very heavy.

I will "third" the motion of the 18-105mm...Am very happy with the images from this "kit" lens...I have better glass but find myself using this as my walkaround more often than not.....
Thank you one and all! I am leaning towards the Sigma. I read a lot of bad press about the Nikon 18 - 105's plastic mount. Feedback?
