from an AP news story today about the NY homeless man who was given boots by a NYC patrolman: Asked about the $100 all-weather boots Officer Larry DePrimo gave him on Nov. 14, Hillman says he's hidden them because "they are worth a lot of money."

He says he's grateful for the gift, but he wants "a piece of the pie" because the photo was posted online "without permission."

Soooooo, Beware !! Posting a photo of a homeless person may cost you a piece of the pie !! Apple or Blueberry ???

I'm sure we'll be watching to see how this one winds up !!!

But famous people don't want pie. They want cake and eat it too. :-)

I looked at that image, and saw an editorial of a NYPD officer helping a guy down on his luck.

I've been homeless, thankfully not for long and I was much younger, and I know what it is to be really cold.

Editorials aren't all b/w.

Wonder if the recipient of the boots would share his piece of pie with his benefactor.

If Homeless Hillman wants a reasonable expectation of privacy he'd best get an apartment with a door, and curtains over the windows. Until then he's fair game, and...no pie!

The guy is homeless and obviously no money. That story has been on all news stations. News stations obviously made money on it.
It's morality, nobody owes him anything but he should be compensated in some way.
I also heard a rumor that the homeless guy sold those shoes.
It's sad but if he wants compensation he will have to hire an attorney.
Strange times we live in. The media can say you may have a claim but sue us, good luck with that.

If any money was made due to the photo....why not? Many a homeless person is ashamed of their circumstances, so they don't like being photographed. I know I was. If someone made money from my photo during that time....there are perks for the Pulitzer Prize winner.

If news agencies have to add "subject compensation" into their list of operating expenses, I think you'll see the nature of news reporting take a new direction...down.

The homeless guy is a veteran and showed his old id. I served from Jan 73 to December 76, so I can relate to what veterans can go through. Having said that, I know we all have our own circumstances, but if you can’t make it in the United States, you obviously have a major problem. Nowhere else in the world do you have the opportunity we have here. The cop goes out of his way to help this guy, and he wants a piece of the pie. I don’t want to come across as unsympathetic to his plight, but there’s a reason he is where he is. No matter what you do for him, he is going to end up shoeless and homeless and back on the street. If you don’t want to help yourself, it doesn’t matter what others do to help you. It’s sad but true.

The topic of posting photos of people taken in a public place has been discussed numerous times here. Sorry but unless the photo is used in an advertisement there is no consent required from the person/people in the photo for it to be published. No pie.

I pay the homeless $5 to do a 2 min shoot. It's a win win. They all sign a release. I volunteer in the kitchen of our local shelter once a month. I know many of the homeless in my home town. Many of the homeless were initially concerned I would be running a story in the press. It's no longer a problem.
I would advise anyone to pay a few bucks in return for the shoot and release.
I'm not surprised the guy was trying to get some money. Most of them are pretty savvy at getting money.

The only time I shoot without a release is if the person is unrecognizable.

Exceptional pictures. That's capturing the essence of the person.

I usually don't admit to having been homeless except in response to people bashing homeless as being lazy. Lucky for me, we at least had a car to sleep in.

The wife and I briefly joined the ranks of the working poor. Stuck in a catch-22 situation where we didn't have enough to afford a place to live, but had too much to get much in the way of assistance.
My grandfather got word of our situation and gave us a downpayment for an apartment.

Don't think I could take photos of homeless people, but if I did I would pay them up front. I'd like to think I'd give them a piece of any pie I got but it's a different story when you actually have the pie and the greed starts setting in.
