Recorded video on Nikon d3100 (video mode NTSC / 1920x1080; 24 fps). Looks great on camera playback but very choppy/jumpy when played on PC. If anyone has an explanation or solution, please do not make it too technical. Thanks

Are you using the video software that came with your camera?
If not, try it. If so you may want to try another like VLC

Probably your PC, video player software being used, or your video card.
Start there; it is very unlikely the camera.
Installed camera software as suggested....I think that did the trick.
Thank you for the help

thats the best way, probably you were playing it back in Windows media player? or similar which probably did not have the correct codecs installed to suit your particular camera.

Likely your computer isn't fast enough. Most video software makers recommend at least an Intel i5 or equivalent AMD and 4GB of RAM memory. I have an Intel i7 with 8GB of RAM now and I can run and edit 1080p 60 frame video with no choppy jittering. Previously I tried it on my Intel Dual Core 2 laptop with 2GB of RAM and had problems.
On a video forum I participate in, a common solution for choppy PC playback of HD video files is to use a free program called Splash LITE from mirillis.com.

I have experienced the same problem with playback from video shot with my canon T2i. Also the sound delivers an echo effect. Playback on the camera is perfect. I think the problem lies with My PC computer which is very old and only has 2 gb of memory. A new PC is in my future, so I hope the problem will go away. Thanks for the heads up on software downloads for better playback results.
