There is no such thing as xmas shopping. Its Christmas shopping or holiday shopping. Why do you celebrate the holidays if you take the reason for the holiday out of it? :hunf:

Theologians who were typing documents would often use the name Christ and abbreviated His name a X (Note it is a cross so the symbol is relevant.)This was in the days of typewriters before word processors where one can use keyboard short cuts, auto complete and auto replace.
Now since X = Christ therefore Xmas = Christmas.

I hope this allows you to see the Christ in Xmas

I cannot write Greek letters here, but the first letter of Christ in Greek is Chi, which is written X. Xristos.

As far as your Six Hundred Pounds.....well spent brother. Enjoy the look on their faces when they receive your gifts. My son has an iPad and it really is quite the thing.

I agree about χ, but English typewriters did not have Greek Characters on them so X was used instead.
BTW: I typed this in a word processor. (Libra Office – free for home use but any word processor would do.) I inserted the Chi as a special character. Then I copied and pasted the text into the reply box.

Thanks, Jimmy. Mine have been extra special since my grandon Caleb has been on the scene. He's 3 this year. It's fun spoiling the little buggers. Have a Merry Christmas, yourself. It sounds like you're on the way to a good one.

to those of us who take our relationship with the Lord Jesus seriously the use of xmas instead of CHRISTmas is as offensive a word as is the use of the n word!

I am sorry if I offended you. I would say that pastors that us X (or Chi) to denote Christ for the most part, take their relationship with the Lord seriously. It seems to me that The devil must love your post and attitude. It has probably done more to turn the unsaved individuals away from Christ than it has has encouraged.

In the interest of Christian love, let's leave it at that.

Thanks for the history lesson about Xmas. I Googled it and learned a lot. The reason that I am suspicious is because CHRISTmas and Resurrection Sunday (Easter) have two meanings. Santa Clause and the Easter bunny. I don't know of any other holiday with double meanings. Does anyone know of any other abbreviations from the other languages?

x or chi in Greek looks like a cross!. I doubt that you will find any pastor, priest reverend or minister that wishes his or her congregation a merry Xmas. is it coincidence that Xmas completely removes the whole reason for the season (Christ) from the name? look at all the store ads, it is all holiday Rudolph is now a holiday special instead of a CHRISTmas special. The world is doing its best to eliminate CHRIST. Unsaved individuals need to see a more active church, one that differs from the world, one that stands up for what it believes in. that is one reason why the main stream lukewarm denominations are losing members rapidly, but fundamentalist and Pentecostal churches are seeing a substantial increase in members. I do not apologize for my devotion to my Lord and Savior for only He and I know from where He rescued me. I also do not tolerate disrespect or blasphemy aimed towards my LORD! sorry but the use of Xmas is blasphemous!
