Here - https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-28-400mm-f-4-8-vr - is a good discussion of the new Nikon 28-400 lens.

I will preface this article by saying that superb HUGE ratio/ranging zooms are possible and affordable and as an example I cite the 2017 Zeiss 24-600 (equiv.) f2.4-4 as used on the Sony RX10m3/4.

I got my new 28-400 Nikon lens today - from B&H. First impressions - I have only taken a few photos (using the Z8) and the quality is great. It is a tiny bit smaller than my 70-300 and its weight feeling is about the same.

Close in focusing at 28mm is nearly macro when compared to my 105mm macro lens. From close in focus to distance focus is a bit slow, but one at the distance range is very fast when the subject is changed. Close-in focus, in continuous focus mode tends to hunt.

To be fair I will attempt (weather permitting) to take more photos tomorrow to get a better feel for how this lens will work.
