Does anyone know of an off brand battery that will replace the Canon LP-E17 and fits the Canon R8? I have one ( Beston Model LP-E17) but in is 7.4 volts not 7.2 volts as the Canon model. Also, when I add this to a two battery Battery Grip the camera gives me a message asking if this is a Canon battery or not.

I have not used it as I am worried about damaging the camera body. Any advice will be appreciated.

The voltage difference doesnt matter. If after warning you the camera allows you to use it anyway, a typical problem would be that the communication chip doesnt meet Canon spec. There likely will be no "fuel gauge" to show you the charge remaining.

7.4 or 7.2 are the same. If you use a meter to measure neither reads 7.2 or 7.4V. The camera gives you the message because it detects that it's not Canon battery not because the voltage is different.
Personally I don't think it would damage the camera but I would simply buy a Canon battery.

Canon bodies allow me to to use third party batteries after the notice, and so I use them. OTOH, I have one Sony outfit that notifies it will NOT run, and it really wont. So that one dumbasted Sony always gets Sony batteries.

I just recently noticed this about Canon vs third party batteries in my R5. When 2 Canon LP-E6NH batteries are in place (with grip) the burst indicator icon will light green and the frame rate is around 12 fps in mechanical mode. If off brand batteries are installed the icon blinks white and the burst rate is significantly slower. In electronic shutter mode the green/white indicator stays white and the burst rate seems to be the same at 20 fps. So for sporting events I now use Canon batteries when possible. Especially if I’m indoors with flickering light sources that occasionally cause banding with the electronic shutter. All other functions seem the same with no ill effects to the camera that I’m aware of.

Try a company called Small Rig thru Amazon. They have a chip in them that enables the to work in my Nikon, so it may be true for Canon.

I have supplemented my battery cache with Watson batteries when traveling with the Nikon D810 & D850. They always worked as well as the dedicated Nikon batteries. I tried a Watson battery in my Nikon Zf and the camera recognized it as being incompatible. Not sure if it was peculiar to my setup or is across the board with the Zf.

I no longer use third party batteries. I'm not sure why I stopped...it might have had to due with the lack of consistency with how long the batteries lasted.

In the past I had used Watson and Lenmar.

Canon's batteries are made by Panasonic so they are already "off-brand". I use Canon, Watson, and Power2000 batteries in my R5, and previous Canons with no issues at all. I hear that Wasabi are are also highly rated. The slight difference in voltage is just dependent on how the manufacturer rates them. It means nothing. Some batteries don't interface properly because they have not secured the rights from Canon to use its proprietary chip. Those I would stay away from because they may be cheaply built.

FWIW: I am very reluctant to buy third party batteries. I am afraid that they might leak and destroy the camera contacts. If it is an aftermarket brand, I will take it out after a shoot!

Good idea.
The peace of mind you get for NOT buying the off brand is worth the extra price you pay for the camera brand's battery.
