This Mottled Duck chick calling for mom is/was the lone survivor of a clutch of about 10-12 chicks. Mom was no where to be found and this clutch was not far from where two adult Red Shouldered Hawks are currently feeding there two juvenile offspring. Interesting how nature times the arrival of species that depend on each other for survival.

Most wild babies are all born near the same time in the spring for several good reasons, I think of all of them yours is number 1
Nice image. I recently had a small flock of ducklings walk across my yard into my pasture. I never saw a parent. I don't think they had much of a chance at survival. It's been about two weeks since then and I haven't seen a trace of them.
