A sound investment?

B&H has a Walkman digital radio. Looks a lot like a cell phone, the case is pure copper, and the price is a measly 3696.00! What a deal -- sure puts my 69.98 Sony Walkman to shame!

Just looked at B&H and I only found 2 one @72.99 and one @73.00. a link would be nice.

Thanks

I would think they are bad investment.

Well, maybe if one owns a sound system with any of these speaker systems:
https://www.whathifi.com/features/11-worlds-most-expensive-loudspeakers

and similarly high end components ($35K turntable, etc.) then one has a good enough "ear" to tell the difference.

Or, one has tons of money and a need to show off his wealth and is tired of wearing multi million dollar Patek Phillipe watches to impress the hoi palloi

Some expensive hifi equipment are good investments but I think the 2 items are not. A good investment is one you can resell for more money or at least they retain value well. I do not think the 2 items retain value well.

For that cost I expected lots of storage - only 256gb - wouldn't hold my library - I'll pass.

I would love one of those! Balanced headphone outputs! I do rip all of my music to lossless file formats. MP3 is shite. I buy from Ray Samuels who hand makes these little beauties. https://www.raysamuelsaudio.com/

Nice, but you can't stick one of those in your shirt pocket!

I agree about MP3 -- too clean it's like taking a portrait and smoothing a person's skin to look like they are made from plastic! I like to hear the full sound like someone's fingers sliding down the strings of a guitar. A lot of ambient sounds that programs like MP3 "see" as noise and eliminate from the recording.

Exactly. Like raw images compared to jpegs.

Looks more like a brass case than copper. Probably only gets the brass bands. :-)

I see no point for MP3. Storage space today is cheap and plenty and our internet bandwidth is very fast these days. There is no reason for MP3.

Interesting thread. Agreed that MP3's are mediocre at best.
Unfortunately, the average consumer either does not care or has never experienced really good audio.
You cannot get full spectrum bass from a 8" powered subwoofer.

I have some MP3's I have collected from back in the pre-Napster, WinMX & Xolox days.
They are mostly rare & obscure items that can no longer be found but the majority of my huge library are FLAC files.

The audiophile world has not changed much other than how much money are you willing to spend.
Many get wrapped up in the specs and cannot tell the difference between $200 speakers $2000 ones.
Much like the camera world of the 'Must have the Latest & Greatest' but have no clue as to the basics.
McIntosh amps such as the MC275 that I sold for around $400 back in 1966 are now worth ~$5000 or more.

My Infinity Quantum III speakers that I have had for almost 50 years still sound excellent. I have replaced the surround on them a few times but that is to be expected. Problem is my old ears ca no longer hear much above 9KHz.
Younger folks who come by are astounded by the clarity they present.

Why, one could purchase a new camera or lens for that much! OR BOTH!
