It works precisely because of the blending of styles, and the combining and breaking of multiple rules or… (ahem) precepts. Jazz and progressive rock ensembles have done it time and again.

I can see it now. Years ago someone looked a photograph and said, "this looks better if the subject is not centered. It looks better if it is located either here, here, here or here which are intersecting points of lines dividing the photo into three,vertical and horizontal sections. I shall call it the rule of thirds and henceforth should be used for good composition. I think knowing the "Rules" is great and perhaps using then while playing with a photo until it looks good to YOU because I believe the human eye is still the best evaluator of good composition.
