AI or AIS lenses make no different on the D3400. They can be used on a Nikon D3400 but only with manual focusing, manual exposure control and no metering.
Sounds bad but actually it's not that bad and quite usable.

The AI-S lenses only make a different on very few cameras although they are the newer version of the AI lenses. So an AI-S lens is always newer than an AI lens.

Can a 3400 display a histogram in the viewing field ? A histogram is as good as (or better than) a normal metering scale.

I am not sure! I don't have a D3400. I never use that feature. I don't even know if my Nikon Df can display a live histogram or not.
Checked the manual of my Df. It can't display the live histogram. Only histogram of an image that it already captured on SD card. If so I just use the image as the exposure guide.

I can’t stress enough how much you would enjoy any Nikon DSLR than incorporated the screw drive, D90’s,D300’s are cheap, D7***’s are all terrific cameras, heck even FF D700’s are cheap. AF and AF-D lenses are a smart enthusiast choice. Lots of great, cheap, fun screw drive lenses out there on the used market. Easy to learn and easy to master, a terrific step up

Why waste your time with a lens that operates only as a manual focus lens in a DSLR? There are numerous Nikon AFS lenses that operate as AF - Auto Focus - lenses on this model. Look for them. See page 252 - Compatible Lenses - Technical Notes - of the D3400 Reference Manual gives you all the exact details of the lenses to seek and those to avoid.

How is manually focusing a “waste of time?” - seems more like someone expressing a preference rather than wasting their time. As well, there are situations in which manual focusing is actually a better decision and, in such cases, a true manual focus lens is preferable, by several orders of magnitude, than an AF lens where focus by wire is fiddly at best.

Nothing is a waste of time if you enjoy it.

Using a digital camera with manual focusing and manually set the exposure without the help of the meter is quite enjoyable. But any way I only answer the OP question I don't ask him why unless the why question is needed for me to find the answer.
But then I know there are people who could never focus an SLR without focusing aids like the split image or microprism.

Half of my 12 lenses for my Nikon Df are manual AIs/AI and Pre AI lenses, I even use them on my new Zf with adapter. I don't consider it as wasting my time, I take my time to shoot with them and it's fun!
