Am looking for a soft lens case for my "new" Nikon 400mm f2.8G lens. It came with the trunk, but I'd like something that would work better for taking it to sporting events, etc. Thanks for any input/recommendations!

You might check out one of the sizes of these on Amazon:

I just bought the 'XXXXXL' size for my new Nikkor 180-600mm lens. Nikon was nice enough to include a cloth to wrap the lens, but I was looking for something a little more substantial. This works great for me.

For my Nikkor 400 2.8 and 800 5.6 I normally just use the soft lens hoods that come with them. These lenses are tough items.

The cases are good if you have to travel with or ship them.

Are you credentialed? Or are the events you speak of scholastic in nature? Otherwise, you’re not likely to be allowed entry with that gear.

My favorite long lens bag is the Think Tank Lens limo. Will transport that 400 with a pro body attached. The lens taxi is good as well, but NOT designed to transport such a large lens with a pro body. I used the Limo for both my former 400/2.8 and current Z version with the TC built-in. Best of luck.

Check out one of the Lens taxis made by ThinkTank. Or other products from this company.

Thanks! I'll likely also use it to travel and don't want to use the "trunk"

Tom it doesn't get any better than the Nikon CL-L2 Soft Case for the 400mm Nikkor (and other Pro-Glass)
This came with my AF-S 200-400mm f/4G ED IF VR Nikkor.

It is more than amazing! You can store your Lens/Camera combo attached... It has over five different padding configurations. It's designed to transport Pro-Glass & Camera in the cargo hold of an aircraft. There is no way to possibly bring a AF-S 200-400mm f/4G ED IF VR Nikkor with D3x or D3 attached as "Carry On Luggage"

Totally fell in Love with this the CL-L2 Case, I was using it every weekend from April through October for Women's League Soccer match play for over 10 years. The CL-L2 Case made setup very quick and virtually seemless, it is a God-Send for Location Assignment! Loved it so much I purchased a second one to carry my Tokina AF 300mm f/2.8 IF ATX SD Prime (which weighs nearly the same as the AF-S 200-400mm f/4).

See images below...

If you're shooting Field Sports Commercially it's a must have...

I had a 200-400 with that case. As mentioned, it is one of the better ones. When I first got it I thought the NIKON pouch shown in the picture was just for a good fit. I was surprised when I realized it was there to hold the removable front glass that came standard with the lens.

Check out the ruggard line. They have what you are wanting. I have their largest and it holds my 300-800mm f5.6 with my d500 attached. It also has some pockets and in one of them I carry my 105mm f2.8 micro lens and my 35mm 1.8. It is a narrow backpack with a handle for carrying. They have 3 sizes I think.
