The process in its current form is something I call blend and tonally match (BTM) as the pdf here
https://www.malcolmmcelvaney.com/written/written.html#38 covers in better detail. I use Gimp and basic layers, mask, and such to produce my images. In addition this process only uses the threshold functions and levels so I would assume easy enough to try in general.
The question I have is there a known process but unknown to me that I have somehow discovered? Even if similar I find a proper term or name helps so much.
Example used in PDF demo. Subtle effect.
Windy evening and direct light. Concept is same but eariler stages of this.
The sunset in the evening was my test. Not sure if sky came out natural looking or not.

I think it's similar to HDR .... where you bracket shots at certain stops apart.
There's software now days to do the blending rather quickly.
