Like No. 3 Linda. You see and capture subjects I don't even see
Thank you Jack! I'm not sure if this is the book I had years ago or not: Photography and the Art of Seeing, by Freeman Patterson. paperback on amazon, used

I think taking a year-long black and white film class at a community college (while in the Navy) helped, and most recently, having to shoot for a theme for a couple of different online groups I've been in.

If you're told to shoot only shadows this week, where would you go and what would you look at? I believe that "seeing" can be learned 🥰

I don’t know if it was that book or one similar that I read. One thing I got from it was ‘don’t just look, see.’

Definitely. At one time, didn't we all take photos of people with trees or poles coming out of the tops of their heads?

I do like #1. Well, maybe I don't LIKE it; it has a desolate feeling but I think it's strong. Like when you're a kid and you're trapped in your parents' car going to see crotchety and boring older relatives (and all mine were) and you know once you get there you'll be trapped inside with them because it's too dreary outside to do anything else. Sort of like that.

I am delighted by this reaction! Thank you so much for your time and sharing that memory

You're welcome...it wasn't a great memory but you really did push a button or two with that photo! Which photos often should do.

Absolutely!

I certainly don't set out to take a boring shot, though sometimes it just works out that way

I like the first one a lot. Someone said it looked desolate, but in the orchard rain is a good thing, and a rainy day means a nice break from work. Everyone's spirits were sky high when it rained.

I used to drive my little Saturn through the orchard and you could really hide out when it was raining. Of course, cell phones ruined everything because once they came into use there was really no way to escape completely. Looking at that photo I am transported back in time, sitting in my car on a rainy day in some remote quarter of the orchard with a hot cup of coffee enjoying the peace and solitude.

Yes, but not just that. What’s in the background, what’s in the foreground, shadows, would it look better from a different angle or perspective, etc.

A fine set Linda. Like the rain drop effect in #1 and the shadows in #3.

Though the practice sounds daunting, we know it can be learned, applied and enjoyed. Thanks for participating in the discussion!
