I have been trying to find an alternative zoom lens that can rival the 70-200mm 2.8 f
I mostly shoot portraits and I have my go to arsenal of prime glass that I use such as
canon 50mm 1.8 - canon 85mm 1.8 - and my beloved canon 135mm f2 .But I have been booking more weddings, switching lens constantly is not practical at these events. The only zoom I own is the sigma 18-35mm 1.8f, but is to wide for how I prefer to shoot weddings. I have always heard and would love to have a 70-200 mm 2.8 either canon, Sigma or tamron. But I recently came across a review about a Sigma 50-100mm 1.8f I like the focal range and am wondering if anyone has any real world experience with the lens or maybe can recommend another lens that fits the need. And yes the price of
70-200 mm 2.8 is why I'm looking for alternative.
Have you looked at used copies to lower the purchase price?
Yes, I have the 1st version without IS is probably obtainable now but if I'm going for that big lens I feel that Image stabilization would be a must. Thoughts?
Interesting! I wasn't aware of this lens, thank you very much I will check it out. Have you ever used this one your self?
And yes, I shoot with the canon 80D apcs

50-100 APSC matches the once very popular compact 75-150 zooms of the film era. I still have one ... really two if I include the 60-120/2.8, a reeeeally compact FF f:2.8 zoom.
I guess f:1.8 is helpful in your work. Not needing faster than f:4.0 I get to enjoy using a do-everything 18-105 when I need a zoom.
Im also quite OK with two fast primes on two bodies, but much smaller bodies than what you use. A pair of SLRs would not appeal to me. But that 50-100 f:1.8 could pair nicely with a fast 20 or 24mm !
60-120mm f2.8 what brand lens is that? Af?

Tokina ATX pre-AF (aka MF)
I use a 24-105 f/4 for weddings…and then switch to a prime if I need it for short depth of field or for low light.

You seem to be at a crossroads with your comments, two in particular hit me hard, this one, "I have been booking more weddings" and this one, "And yes the price of 70-200 mm 2.8 is why I'm looking for alternative".
If your booking more weddings and you can't afford a 70-200, either your not charging enough, or, your underselling yourself. Look, I was a wedding photographer for over 40 years, I only had a 28mm and 105mm for the first 5 years I shot. Then I booked more weddings and upped my game, I suggest it is time for you to up your game and charge more so you can get the equipment that will help you up your game.

Yeah. What he said!
It’s all too common that we undercharge for our work. I see the same thing in venues like Etsy or Art.com: mounted 11x14s for $25.00 to $30.00 (shipping included) for example.
With digital, weddings are sooooo much easier than they used to be, but you should really consider upping your prices with the very least goal of expanding your kit (with something like the 80-200 you desire) after just a couple of gigs.
Good luck!
I would say from what I hear wedding photographers saying the new Tamron 35-150 2/2.8 is one lens that does all for the wedding. Maybe a 85 1.4 for certain pics...
I could never do a wedding with a 70-200. No wide angle shots and close-ups would put me too far back.
The 24-105 is one stop more but in a crowded area, you need the wide angle.
