Petrified Wood—Petrified Forest National Park

Before this became a national monument. and later a national park, people took the petrified wood as souvenirs, and to use in buildings. I wonder what it would have been like for the first ancient people who came upon this scene to see all the trees turned to stone, scattered for miles around, in the middle of a desert...

I can't answer the question either, but I would bet that it spawned a good legend!

Thank you.

I meant the ancient people who first inhabited North America, millions of years after these trees had been fossilized. When they were alive and growing it is likely that there were no people on earth yet.

Thanks, Jim. It's not the Grand Canyon, but it's a lot closer to us. We've been there many times.

I think the trees predated the first humans by a few million years.
