and looking for any tips. The shoot will probably take place outside under a sunny San Diego sky. Best settings? Also, would sports mode be appropriate since I anticipate movement?
I've shot kids in the park and keep my camera on manual, but focus mode on continuous.
If you could have the parents interacting with the child, perhaps they could keep him/her from running around too much.
Do you know the location you'll be shooting?
I shot my first 2 yr. old and Mom a few weeks ago. I do recommend a high shutter speed and continuous shoot. They move fast and often. You are trying to catch that one moment and it will take an alert photographer and many shots to get it. Also, use a helper or family members to get the childs attention, looking a certain way, laughing, etc.. I am attaching two shots. The first is an example of a natural interaction not looking directly at the photographer. The second, I do not recommend but hey, the uncle was tossing him in the air.
Thank you both for the tips. Loved the photos. The photo shoot is scheduled for December 8. I'll post if I get any good shots. Thank you again.

Hello D. Chk out earlier topic " family photo stress" I received many helpful ideas and came up with a few myself. Shoot a lot and have attention getters. I used M&Ms (only give one at a time), and I used my dog's squeaky chicken held out where I wanted them to look. Try to stick to your list and get done before the sugar rush kicks in. Sus
