I've tried isopropyl; however, it bleaches out the colors and they get soft and can fall apart. I found white vinegar to work well as an alternative (hey, it works for pickles!). One of the better choices I've tried was "Everclear" 190-proof grain alcohol liquor (drink responsibly). It's more expensive than denatured alcohol which I buy a gallon of. The grain alcohol evaporates when placed in containers that are not sealed air-tight (I use plastic pill bottles to store my specimens in).
