Saw him in Albany at grand opening of the Albany County Civic Center... marvelous concert, but I have heard from a couple of people who saw him in person in Vegas that the smaller venue was much better ---- and I don't know how it could have been since he was great in Albany.

Well Mark, I don't know how to thank you for this post with Count Basie and Sinatra. Nobody ever did "Fly Me to the Moon" better than Sinatra and Count Basie. I tried to copy Basie's Band when I was working (playing) around with my Slingerland Drums. It was about 10:30 when I put the dishes in the sink after dinner. I had to listen a lot of the album and then I found a lot of youtube's Sinatra's and Basie's stuff on youtube and listened to them. Then I found some good stuff from Lionel Hampton. I loved him back when I was in high school (57 to 61) and 7th and 8th grade before that. Didn't in Hamps early days get a start when Benny Goodman heard him and picked him up for awhile. I think I say that on an early movie about Benny Goodman was trying to really get more popular. I saved a bunch of stuff on the computer last night, so I know I have a ton of stuff to straighten out today. It was unbelievable to listen and watch some of Hamp's videos at his age. I saved one when he was 91 yrs old and recorded "How High the Moon" in 1993. If I got it right he was born Apr 20, 1902 and passed away Aug 31, 2002. I'd like to know what kept him and his band members going so long, God bless all of them. Well, I better go to bed for awhile. It is now 5:18 am, but I was having a ball listening and watching some of these videos tonight. Here is a link for you that I listened to about 10 times. It is amazing the way he could spin those drum sticks around and never miss a beat. The man was a genious, wish we still had them. Thanks for the post that got me started last night. I'll be tired today, but I had a blast. Some of the videos and music I heard last night I thought were gone for ever. Some of the memories made this 81 yr old man have wet leaking eyes.

IMHO, the best album Sinatra ever recorded was “ The Concert Sinatra” every note every song just perfect.

Hi Walter,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. Hamp was incredible. As far as I know, he played with Benny Goodman on the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert. An amazing man and career! I saw Hamp at a couple of JATP concerts back in the later 50's.
