1 - Do not watch it on TV
2 - Read online, kill the adds with an extension.
3 - Select what you read, according to your interest or research.
4 - Use other sites to get better news or even faster news. More often than not, read the news from OTHER COUNTRIES point of view.
5 - Other sources have all a bias, keep this in mind and maybe, just maybe, you will understand slightly* more as to what is really reported.

* This is not a veiled insult, just a statement of fact as there is no way to figure out what is really going on, WE get snippets, contradictory information. The only certain thing is that if you are aware of this and the bias built into the news, your vision does not become extreme.
I studied journalism, mass media and advertisement in the 80s, nothing has changed, just the medium when it comes to 'regular' sources'. What has changed is the internet free for all where any fool's voice can be heard if repeated enough by equally foolish folks.
It all comes down to education.

I fully understand the bias in reporting news and having to check multiple sources to figure out what's really going on. I read the BBC web site extensively daily and get a different perspective on things, including what they consider important in sports (yawn). They are particularly good at reporting the things going on in the world that we ignore, but recently they've been grabbing stories from US sources and repeating them almost word for word.
If you haven't already, check the podcast from the Telegraph of London on the Ukraine war. Drops on the west coast at 9AM. It's called: Ukraine the Latest. Really well done.
CNN is bottoming out...is why.
They are looking for revenue...

They have struggled lately, to find a leader who isn't whiplashed by politics. But frankly, ALL video is going to be Internet video in the future.
Broadcasting as we know it is dying a death of a billion tiny cuts. That's sad, because it is all too easy to lie, cheat, steal, betray, deceive, and mislead people with micro channels. Truth and objectivity have become tainted commodities.

It's not that I don't agree with you Mr. Burk, but I see it differently having been on an editorial board for 15 years.
Apparently those that are brainwashed or like being lied to, no critical thinking skills or stuck in the 80's still watch CNN. Ted Turner departed a long time ago and the forces behind CNN and its rival Fox News, have become extreme leaning news outlets bent on political fodder.
I could literally list dozens of news sources that have soured themselves with political opines and manufactured news. This all started in the 80's with the loss/buyout of locally operated Mom and Pop newspapers and local event recording. Internet killed many. It used to be called "responsible reporting".
Its easier to control the masses with faxed talking points and editorial censoring by "corporate" than letting independent news outlets reporring from real life local events that are offered to the people rather than being force fed across every channel. Censorship sucks. I personally don't watch any of them. I don't give a rip about any teporters opinion. Same for entertainers and actors. Stick to your craft. I am sure no one cares about my opinion either but you can still treat me decently if I stand up to give it.

It's not just CNN.
Every so often I see a post here on UHH that links to a website that looks like it might have something interesting, or the poster is extolling the website so I click on the link. About 20-30% of the time I get a dialog to log in to read the website. Fox news has asked me to sign in for at least two years now so they can send me advertising. I don't.
And it's not just news sites, either.

Fox wants you to sign in because of comment sections...they don't send any advertisements. I've never received one anyways.
In the USA...I pretty much only trust at a glance...the WSJ...that's about it.
Most of western media is controlled now.
I look elsewhere now...outside of the country.
