Our next port was Sète France, another place we had never heard of. We arrived in Sète France at 8 AM and departed at 9 PM. We had a 2 hour walking tour at 9:30 and then time to explore on our own. Sète is about 35 km from Montpellier. This is the first of two posts from our visit to Sète.

Sète is a commune in the Hérault department, in the region of Occitania, southern France. Its inhabitants are called Sétois (male) and Sétoises (female) in French, "Setòris" and "Setòria" in Occitan. Known as the Venice of Languedoc and the singular island (in Paul Valéry's words), it is a port and a seaside resort on the Mediterranean with its own very strong cultural identity, traditions, cuisine and dialect.

Built upon and around Mont St Clair, Sète is situated on the south-eastern end of the Étang de Thau, an enclosed salt water lake used primarily for oyster and mussel fields. To its other side lies the Mediterranean, and the town has a network of canals which are links between the Étang de Thau and the Mediterranean Sea.

The port city of Sète, is known as the “Venice of the Languedoc.” Located on a thin strip of land, Sète received its name from the many canals that crisscross it, linking the Mediterranean to the enclosed saltwater lagoon of Ethang de Thau. Sète has the largest fishing fleet on France’s Mediterranean coast where they troll the fish-abundant waters. Sète is a major port city, different from other resorts in southern France. We had some free time to wander around before heading back to the ship.

Thanks rdemarco. As I noted, we were unaware of it until we saw it on the cruise itinerary; we enjoyed our visit. I just posted another set at https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-802231-1.html
